Baskets created by the Wounaan indigenous tribe of Colombia are widely considered to be the finest and most beautiful baskets in the world. Galeria Atotonilco introduced these stunning baskets to Mexico for the first time when gallery owner Mayer Shacter traveled to Colombia in 2017 and was able to purchase baskets directly from the artists themselves. These vibrant and intricate baskets are the result of ancient weaving traditions passed through generations of the indigenous peoples of the Choco rainforest. It can take from three months to three years for a weaver to create a single basket, starting with collecting and working the palm fibers, coloring them with dyes derived from nature, and weaving the basket using a needle.
