The abundant woodcarvers in the State of Guerrero have been carving masks for dance ceremonies for centuries. Each village has its own dance and festival traditions calling for distinctive masks. This early 20th century mask was worn in the Dance of the Gachupin or the Spanish who wanted to reject indigenous traditions. The dance was done throughout the colonial era.
